A practical DNA-safe chamber

The Attestor Forensics MEGAfume cyanoacrylate is a fingerprint development chamber for non-porous surfaces.

Cyanoacrylate (superglue) fuming is a method for developing fingerprints on non-porous surfaces, such as metal, glass, and plastics. Our MEGAfume series has been developed specifically for accredited laboratories that require high levels of safety, quality, and cleanliness for this task.

Our practical DNA-safe chambers come in 4 sizes:- a small benchtop size and 2 larger floor standing models as well as our latest portable unit.

All of our MEGAfume systems have a sleek and modern design, built to be easy to clean and provide and excellent well-lit view of evidence from any angle, with a user-friendly touch-panel display.

Features

  • Innovative Interior Concept All inner side walls are made from seamless safety glass panels. The support rails on the side can be used with sturdy grills or freely distributable hanging and support rods (all made from stainless steel). Grills, rods and supports can be completely removed for easy cleaning making the system highly suitable for DNA sensitive applications.
  • Pre-programmable Cycles for different evidence types and chemicals (cyanoacrylate, liquid or in powder form, fluorescent or non-fluorescent) care for ease of use and consistent quality of print development. Parameters and timer can be adjusted by the user to his particular best practice rules. Alternatively the entire process can be controlled manually.
  • USB Process Data Logger  Like our forensic climate chamber NINcha, the MEGAfume features a data logger system, recording all parameters relevant to a development cycle for quality documentation.  This tool provides a graphical report which can ease the burden internal/external audits by providing auditors with a simple and easy to understand report of the conditions each evidence run has experienced.
  • Electro-mechanical door interlock  The large glass front door, which allows easy loading of the cabinet, is interlocked by the control system during the development process via an electro-mechanical locking mechanism. In combination with a high performance silicon seal this ensures secure and low maintenance closure of the cabinet.
  • UV Decontamination Unit (optional)  In addition to the easy cleanable surfaces an optionally available UV-C unit allows breaking up the DNA chains on interior surfaces to reduce the risk of cross contamination.
  • Low cost of ownership and minimal waste The new carbon activated sachet type filter insert reduces land fill waste, simple to replace and are low cost making the MEGAfume environmentally friendly and economic to operate. The intelligent filter management system calculates filter more accurately optimising filter lifetime.
  • Touch panel control Multi-lingual operator guidance and touch panel control for humidity, temperature and cycle time.
  • Easy clean design   The innovative design makes the cleaning and maintenance of the MEGAfume system very simple. All shelves and internal parts can be removed for unhindered cleaning access.
  • Clear visibility of the evidence at all times   All 4 sides are glass panels providing all round visibility of the evidence.  Internal LED lights on all 4 sides provide controllable directional illumination during the development process.
  • Serviced, maintained and traceable ISO17025 calibrated from our UK trained staff  With any core lab equipment maintenance and optimal performance is critical.  Our trained UK staff provide on site support, service and ISO17025 traceable calibration services.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean the MEGAfume interior?

During a cyanoacrylate fuming cycle, cyanoacrylate will stick to the interior chamber surfaces as well as your evidence. A clean chamber surface will attract less cyanoacrylate buildup, making fuming your evidence more effective, and will reduce the risk of evidence cross-contamination. We have made it easy to clean our units between uses to reduce cyanoacrylate and DNA contaminants.

We use tempered safety glass in our fuming chambers. It is easy to clean and resistant to scratching. This can be wiped down with a microfiber cloth dampened with cleaning solution shortly after an evidence fuming cycle.

While very abrasive and corrosive cleaning agents should not be used to clean the stainless-steel floor of the chamber, it can be wiped down with a microfiber cloth and mild cleaning solution, and other solutions used for decontamination, including alcohol and peroxide-based cleaners.

During cleaning, we recommend removing the chamber circulation fan, water reservoir, and air baffle. These are easy to wipe down separately. Any electrical contacts should be covered during cleaning, and any residue should be wiped off to help keep them fully functional. When cleaning any chamber, we recommend vacuuming out the chamber after the rest of the cleaning has been done to remove any dust or fibres from the cleaning cloths.

How many cycles will my filter last?

The exact number of cycles your filter can be used for before it is saturated will depend on the type of developer you use and how much you use. Using more glue and developers that are more taxing on the filter life will of course mean your filter life is shorter than if you just use small amounts of standard developer. More details about this can be found in the filter management information section.

Using a typical amount of standard developer, our smaller MEGAfume S61 model can run around 180 cycles, the larger MEGAfume M61 around 120 cycles before the filter needs to be changed.

Users can keep track of the filter life on the filter management display, which will tell the user how much filter life they have left and when the filter needs to be changed. This can be done easily and without any special tools.

What developers can I use with the MEGAfume?

The MEGAfume can be used with all known cyanoacrylate developers on the market, including one-step fluorescent developers. It can be used with developers that require temperatures between 100 – 250°C and 60-90% rH. Both liquid and powder developers can be used. Thanks to our cycle customization options that let you fully customize your cycle parameters, you’ll be prepared for developers that aren’t even on the market yet making our systems more future proof. Our filter management system can be adjusted for different developer types to accurately monitor your filter life, regardless of the type of developer you choose to use.

Our pre-programmed options include standard cyanoacrylate developer, and both liquid and powder fluorescent developer programs. In addition to the fully customizable program options, these pre-program cycle settings can be adjusted and saved as needed.

Will longer evidence fit in the MEGAfume?

This depends on how long your evidence is. There is a great deal of variation in the lengths of things like bats, swords, and firearms. Currently, we have two basic sizes of MEGAfume models, the S61 and M61. The S61 has a chamber height of 75cm. If placed diagonally from the front to the back of the chamber, evidence as long as 90cm can be accommodated. This can be 109cm long if evidence is placed diagonally from a front to the back corner of the chamber.

The M61 model chamber height is 125cm. Diagonally, from front to back, evidence that is 136cm long can be accommodated. This is extended to 147cm when evidence is placed diagonally from a front to the back corner of the chamber.

For larger pieces of evidence, we will be releasing the MEGAfume XL61 in Spring 2021. We also recommend looking at our MOBIfume mobile cyanoacrylate fuming system, which can be used to develop evidence in small fuming rooms or tents, and can be scaled to fume even larger spaces, like garages and hangars.

For those who often handle firearm evidence and longer pieces of evidence, we also recommend one of our MEGAfume evidence support system accessories, designed to hold and support longer pieces of evidence, including long-arms.
